Artist's Comments

*flops*

It's a mixture of styles between Maori kirituhi and knotwork - not the most obvious of partners, but I think it works.

I've always loved Maori design, and this is loosely based on double-headed koru spirals. But it is not an animal I hear you cry! The competition demands animals! Well, ok, it's not an obvious animal. Sorry. But more subtly, it is even doubly an animal! The actual shape is that of a stylised hammerhead shark (called mangopare by the Maori), and then secondly:

"For double headed Koru, known as Mango Pare, most Maori artists will tell you that this design pertains to the warrior. This double headed "analogy" takes its form from the Hammerhead Shark. A symbol of strength and ferocity that best fits the warrior and the attitude required to be successful in that occupation." (taken from [link])

So its doubly a hammerhead shark - and they rock

Hope you like it, because I do!

A print will be forthcoming, I think ...

This is fantastic. Definitely a hammerhead shark, it clearly resembles that animal. Not just the shapes are perfect, but the choice of colors as well. Also, wonderful combination of Maori and Celtic designs, in a refined and pure style. Very stylish, elegant, yet absolutely fitting for a warrior. It is amazing how you interlace hard wildness with fine, modest beauty. I'm stunned, and although I can't predict the outcome of the contest, if I were part of the jury, there would be no doubt about the winner.

Wow, this is beautiful. I really see it as the deisgn on a long shield =) I guess that sort of goes well with the hammer head shark / warrior business =) Do you do all of these by hand? I am symmetrically crippled, so it amazes me :|

This is a lovely blend of style. I think it's very well done. The knotwork is very nice. The symmetry is also very well done, though it is imperfect enough in a few spots so that I can tell you've done it by hand (not meant as a criticism btw) How do you get it to look so symmetrical when you do it by hand? Do you use graphed paper at all or do you just wing it? I'm so nitpicky with my own work that I always have to have it nearly perfect, which gets incredibly tedious and involves a lot of erasing :P Nice job :)

It's amazing how well those two styles work together so well and it's completely symmetrical, how do you DO that?! Very inspirational, it's nice to see completely new styles develop. You're incredibly wonderful lady xxxxxxxxx *hugs*

I think knotwork has to have a few asymmetries to look "real" - well, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!! I don't use graph paper, I just somehow seem to have some ability to get symmetry sorted if I'm utterly determined to do it. I'll generally draw the midline, then draw one side of the basic outline, then mark out key points on the other side, measuring the distance of various bits - ok its not completely hand drawn, a ruler does get involved! Then there's a lot of cursing and swearing and some time later something appears that is vaguely symmetrical!!!!!
