Design decided on after [insert standard Jac Carey disclaimer] a lot of discussion with members of the Kushiel's Trilogy community on LJ, people who commented on the draft designs here, and of course

For a description of how the various bits in this evolved, have a look here, and after that, there's not really a lot more to say. This is just a conglomeration of all the bits I liked from the drafts, and all the bits everyone else seemed to like too. And it seems to fit Alcuin, and that's all I could hope for
